Synopsis[]
Zatch, Ponygon, and Hana attend a summer festival, but after getting separated, Zatch meets a mysterious girl who calls herself Princess Kaguya. Though she hides from bodyguards, she cheers Zatch up after his disappointing start and the two enjoy festival games, food, and prizes together using his last bit of money. Later, she reveals a story mirroring the folklore of Princess Kaguya, claiming emissaries from the moon will soon take her back, and begs Zatch for help when they appear. He carries her to safety, and on a rooftop she admits to lying yet thanks him for showing her the joy of things money can’t buy. Giving him the goldfish they caught and her ribbon as a keepsake, she departs by helicopter as “Lady Natsuko,” while Zatch fondly remembers their time together.
Full Summary[]
Zatch and Ponygon are filled with excitement when they see Hana setting up festival lanterns around the exterior of the house. Zatch goes to Kiyo’s room to tell him about the summer festival taking place that evening but realizes during their conversation that he doesn’t even know what a festival is. Kiyo explains it to him and assures him that by the time it starts, he’ll understand. When the sun sets, Zatch waits outside Kiyo’s room to ask him to come along, but Kiyo is too absorbed in his research on the Demon World structure to leave. Despite this, Zatch and Ponygon join Hana and the three of them head to the festival together.
At the festival, Zatch gets separated from Hana and Ponygon in the crowd and loses most of his allowance. A young girl retrieves some of the dropped coins and hands them back before hiding from mysterious bodyguards searching for her. When spotted, she begs Zatch for help, and he hides her inside his kimono. They retreat to a quiet spot, where Zatch laments his poor festival experience, but the girl cheers him up, insisting festivals are supposed to be fun. She hands him a ten-thousand-yen bill and introduces herself as Princess Kaguya, determined to show him how fun a festival can be.
Back at the stalls, Kaguya tries to use her money but is rejected due to its high value. Upset, she sulks until Zatch offers to share his last three hundred yen. They play the goldfish scooping game together and manage to catch one, then wander the festival enjoying the sights. With their last coins, they win a shooting game and share a free yakisoba meal as their prize.
Afterward, Zatch remembers he needs to find Hana and Ponygon, which makes Kaguya suddenly upset. When he mentions the strange bodyguards, she explains her story, tying it to the folklore of Princess Kaguya: emissaries of the moon come to take her back during the full moon in August. She cries that she doesn’t want to return, but the emissaries soon find her. Begging Zatch for help, the two run and, when surrounded, Zatch carries her on his shoulders and dashes across the festival stalls to safety on a rooftop.
There, Kaguya admits she lied but asks how much of her story he believes. Zatch says he believes it all, moving her to tears. She answers her phone, saying she’s ready to return, and tells Zatch that, like the real Princess Kaguya, she learned that some things money can’t buy are more important. Hugging him, she gives him the goldfish they caught, tying her ribbon around its bag. Before boarding a helicopter, her emissaries call her Lady Natsuko, and she apologizes for lying while thanking Zatch for the time they shared. Zatch replies that he had fun too, waving goodbye as she returns home.
