Synopsis[]

After returning from the ruins, Kiyo struggles to adjust back to school life as Toyama targets him with unfair pop quizzes meant to punish him for his absences, leading to his first-ever low score. While Zatch causes chaos trying to stay by Kiyo’s side and Suzy repeatedly tries to welcome him home, Kiyo grows increasingly frustrated with Toyama’s antics, especially when a second test asks the absurd question of describing Toyama’s first love. With help from Suzy, his classmates, and eventually the principal—who exposes Toyama’s scheme—Kiyo and the class finally see Toyama put in his place, ending with Suzy properly welcoming Kiyo back.

Full Summary[]

Kiyo, Zatch, Ponygon, and Hana enjoy a leisurely breakfast together for the first time since Kiyo and the others had returned from their recent trip to the ruins. Before Kiyo heads to school, Sunbeam pays a brief visit to pick up Ponygon to spend the day with him. After the two of them leave, Zatch would then insist he follow Kiyo to school as Ponygon had left. Like usual, Kiyo would refuse to allow this but Zatch would protest this decision anyhow. As Kiyo chases Zatch on the way to school, Suzy sees him and tries to catch up in order to welcome him back home. As Zatch dashes off in the direction of the school, he stumbles down the road and accidentally throws his Vulcan 300 on top of a truck. The truck drives off and Zatch would run after it in hopes of retrieving his Vulcan. At the same time, Suzy makes multiple attempts to get Kiyo’s attention but fails as other classmates would come and greet Kiyo both on the way and at school.

Class at school would soon begin as Toyama entered the classroom to call everyone to their seats. When Toyama notices Kiyo, he briefly welcomes him back after his long absence before then handing out a pop quiz to spite Kiyo for missing his classes. As Kiyo begins working on the test, Zatch and a swarm of yellowtail fish burst through the windows of the class. Kiyo is then ordered by Toyama to take Zatch out of the classroom which costs him some time to work on the test. Just as Kiyo returns and continues his work with the time he has left, Wife enters the classroom to deliver a lunchbox she prepared for Nakata, her husband and the homeroom teacher for the class. Since Nakata wasn’t there, Toyama requests that Kiyo take Wife to him. Kiyo initially refuses this until Suzy volunteers to do so. Remembering Suzy’s ability to easily get lost, Kiyo reluctantly leaves the class to help Wife instead.

Back in class again, Kiyo frantically tries to finish his test with what little time he has left. All is well until Kiyo reaches the final question to which he finds himself unable to answer. This question would ultimately be left blank as time runs out for him. The next day, Kiyo received his graded test and discovered he had earned a 70% which was a less than ideal score for him as Kiyo had always performed exceptionally well in his academics. Kiyo would desperately try to get rid of this test sheet but his classmates would discover it anyway and the news surprises everyone. Suzy would ask him about this and reveal that she had scored the same points as him. When Kiyo looks at her test sheet, he sees that she did answer the one question he missed. Toyama then takes the opportunity to emphasize to Kiyo the importance of class attendance as he explains that he intentionally created a test that would include questions from the lectures that Kiyo missed. Toyama would also mention that his motivation to do this was because he was bothered that Kiyo had always received perfect scores.

Furious with this, Kiyo insults Toyama by calling him the worst teacher. In response, Toyama decides that he’ll give a test the next day that would only contain material covered while Kiyo was absent but suggests that he may tell him what it would be if Kiyo apologizes. Kiyo refuses to do so which now leaves him in a position where he won’t be able to properly prepare for the test. Suzy however gladly offers him her notes to help him study and so do some of his other classmates. Though he appreciates the gesture, Kiyo finds himself unable to use their notes as none of them were helpful to refer to. Kiyo would try to ask Kaneko for his notes knowing that he always performs well on academics but he refuses as this was the first time he finally scored higher than Kiyo. Not willing to give up in his search for notes, Kiyo goes around the classroom to politely ask his other classmates for help and many of them gladly provide him with their materials to study with.

The next day arrives and Toyama hands out the tests to everyone as promised and everyone in the class is feeling confident as Kiyo had provided them all with a comprehensive test study guide. When the test begins, everyone immediately realizes that the first and only question is impossible for them to answer as it asks them to describe the first time Toyama fell in love. Toyama relishes in Kiyo’s inability to answer the question until Zatch and Ponygon bring in the principal of the school to the classroom. When the principal learns about Toyama’s test, he becomes enraged at the ridiculousness of the question and demands a discussion in his office. The class would then celebrate as Toyama’s schemes had finally come to an end.

As they all walk home together, Kiyo and his classmates talk about the events that had transpired that day and express how relieved they are knowing that Toyama won’t be creating any more strange tests. Just before Suzy parts ways with him to head home with the others, she takes the opportunity to finally speak with Kiyo and properly welcomes him home.

Manga & Anime Differences[]

  • All appearances Hana, Zatch, Ponygon, Nakata, and Wife have in this episode is entirely filler as none of them have any involvement during these events in the manga.
  • Sunbeam does not appear in the original chapter that this episode was based on as he would be introduced much later than the time it had originally taken place.
  • Sunbeam also appears too early to have been in Kiyo’s town at this time as he had yet to announce he would move into the area
  • Ponygon at this time following the events of the ancient demon should have also been temporarily living with Sunbeam.
  • Ponygon had also been yet to be introduced in the manga during the time that this chapter took place in.
  • In the manga, all of the students and Toyama all wore their short sleeved uniforms. In the anime, everyone was wearing their long sleeved uniforms.
  • In the manga, Kiyo had been absent from Toyama’s class due to him having to recover from some injuries from an early battle. In the anime, he had been absent because of his trip to the ruins.
  • In the anime, Toyama’s class begins with Kiyo and his classmates taking a test. In the manga, this test had already been taken by everyone a week prior and they would only be seen receiving the results for it.
  • In the manga, Suzy and Yamanaka talk to each other about the ways Kiyo had changed to them. In the anime, Mariko talks about Kiyo with Suzy but their conversation is not as in-depth and was only one-sided as Suzy was too distracted looking at Kiyo to respond.
  • In the anime, Zatch and Ponygon bring the principal to Kiyo’s classroom which would then lead to Toyama being scolded for the test he had given out. In the manga, the angry class gets Toyama in trouble and he would be seen having a discussion with the vice principal instead.
  • By the end of the manga chapter, Kiyo and various other bookkeepers would learn that there are 70 other demons remaining in the battle through a message that suddenly appears in the spell book. Not only were these messages never seen in the anime, but this episode takes place much later than when this event was seen in the manga.
