Synopsis[]
Nicolas is upset about Majirou's book becoming burnt. When he plays his depression through his bagpipes, it causes anyone who hears it to become sad too. Folgore volunteers to bring Nicholas to Italy to rid his sadness. Once there, Folgore shows Nicholas the merry town in Italy and tells him he must remember the good times he had with Majirou. Nicholas becomes upset and plays his bagpipes, causing people around him to cry in sorrow. Next, Folgore takes Nicholas to a forest and tells him to let nature wash away his grief but also fails. Folgore then attempts to get Nicholas to play his depression into a hole and trap it in there. The depression bursts out of the hole and causes the whole country of Italy to suffer a depression. Nicholas runs away once realizing what he has done to the country. Folgore meanwhile decides that to combat Nicholas's depression, he must combat the depression in Italy. Folgore starts to dance his famous song with his cheerful spirit but is overcome by the depression. Nicholas, seeing Folgore's spirit, remembers that his goal was to spread happiness with his bagpipes and proceeds to play a happy tune. This cancels the depression he caused in Italy, and he decides to continue playing to keeping Majirou's memory alive.
Full Summary[]
Folgore invites Nicholas to Italy
Kiyo and his friends visit Nicholas in the hospital, where he sits in quiet despair. Depressed and guilt-ridden, Nicholas laments his failure as Majirou’s partner and mourns him by playing a sorrowful melody on his bagpipes. Folgore, deeply moved by Nicholas’ grief, proposes to take him to Italy, believing that the lively atmosphere and beautiful scenery might help him recover. Without hesitation, Folgore and Kanchomé whisk him away, and the group spends their first day exploring a bustling town filled with happy, carefree people. Folgore gently encourages Nicholas to focus on the good times he shared with Majirou instead of dwelling on the pain of loss. Though Nicholas briefly seems comforted, his sadness resurfaces as he remembers just how much he misses his partner.
Unwilling to give up, Folgore and Kanchomé try again, this time bringing Nicholas out to the countryside in hopes that nature will help soothe him. Nicholas attempts to enjoy the calm of the open fields, but once again finds himself overwhelmed with memories of Majirou. Refusing to accept defeat, Folgore and Kanchomé create a new plan: they dig a deep hole for Nicholas to “bury” his sadness in. Nicholas pours his grief into the melody of his bagpipes, directing the sound into the pit. Folgore then casts Poruku to transform Kanchomé into a massive weight meant to contain it. But Nicholas’ sorrow proves too strong—his mournful tune bursts free from the hole and spreads across the countryside, infecting entire towns with unbearable sadness. Before long, people everywhere are drowning in tears. When Nicholas realizes his grief has caused such devastation, guilt consumes him, and he runs away. Believing he might have returned to their hotel, Folgore and Kanchomé head back to look for him.
Majirou shows interest in Nicholas' bagpipes
When they arrive, Nicholas is nowhere to be found. Wandering the streets in search of him, they discover the townspeople still lost in despair. Determined to help, Folgore decides to hold a live performance with Kanchomé, hoping their music can restore some cheer. The pair sing one of Folgore’s signature songs, but even their most passionate performance fails—the sadness weighing on the people is too great to be lifted so easily. On the edge of town, however, Nicholas overhears their music. He notices that some people don’t even stop to listen, and it reminds him of his time with Majirou—when most ignored his bagpipes, but Majirou always loved his music. With this memory, Nicholas recalls that his true purpose was never just to play, but to spread joy and laughter around the world together with Majirou.
With renewed spirit, Nicholas lifts his bagpipes once more and begins to play a bright, cheerful melody. The effect is immediate—joy floods back into the people of the town, washing away their despair. The sound carries through the streets, lifting everyone’s spirits, and Nicholas finally feels the weight of grief ease from his heart. Turning to Folgore and Kanchomé, he thanks them for helping him find his way again. With a smile, he vows to continue traveling the world, spreading happiness with his music, just as Majirou would have wanted. As Nicholas departs on his new journey, Folgore and Kanchomé watch proudly, remarking on how happy he looks now and how relieved they are to see him moving forward at last.
