| Overview |
Maestro (マエストロ Maesutoro) is a mamodo that was one of the 100 trying to become king and was the King of the In-Between World. His power is magnetism. Maestro has no partner due to the properties of the In-Between World. He also appears in the video game Konjiki no Gash Bell!! Yūjō Tag Battle 2 (the Japanese version of Zatch Bell! Mamodo Battles) as a secret boss character.
Appearance[]
Maestro has an imposing, Japanese-inspired appearance with a strong samurai motif. He wears a full helmet with a golden crest and crimson horns that completely covers his head, paired with long dark hair tied back in a traditional mizuna style. His attire resembles a cream-colored yukata-style outfit, with wide sleeves and loose pants bound at the waist by a black belt. Over this, he dons a black and crimson armored breastplate decorated with green, magatama-like ornaments, emphasizing a mystical aura. A dark cape drapes from his shoulders, enhancing his commanding presence. Distinctly, his under-eye markings are jagged zigzag lines resembling lightning bolts, differing from the usual straight monster lines. At his left hip rests a sword, symbolizing his martial discipline, while in his other hand he holds his purple spellbook. Even among mamodo, Maestro stands out for his remarkable size — easily over 2–3 meters tall, towering above fighters like Brago. In battle, his body reveals its hidden potential: three coil-like protrusions sprout from his back, forming an “amplification coil.” When empowered by these coils, Maestro’s strength increases drastically, allowing him to endure direct blows from both Gash and Brago without relying on enhancement spells.
Personality[]
Although Maestro is portrayed as the “villain” of the story, he is not depicted as inherently cruel or sadistic. Rather than malice, what drives him is a sense of injustice — his desire for revenge stems from being unjustly excluded from the Mamodo battle due to an error by the organizers, despite not being at fault himself. His actions are undeniably violent, but they are rooted in a grievance against fate and circumstance, rather than an irrational hatred of others. Unlike many antagonists, Maestro never expresses a desire to hurt or kill specific individuals. His remarks — such as “The monsters sent to the human world are so naive” and “I have no interest in battles between monsters that are bound by rules” — can be read as more than disdain. They carry a tone of envy for the fair battles he was denied, underscoring the depth of his frustration at being unjustly excluded. Despite his position as an enemy, Maestro demonstrates refinement, restraint, and dignity. When hosting Brago and Sherry, he welcomed them as guests, offering them a comfortable room and even a piano. Even when summoning Brago for his own purposes, he spoke with courtesy, saying, “I apologize for having called you” and “There is no need for any mutually beneficial conflict.” Such interactions highlight his civility and lack of personal malice. His subordinates also embody his influence: they serve him with loyalty and respect, with no sign of betrayal or dissatisfaction, suggesting his leadership inspires genuine devotion rather than fear. Through these depictions, Maestro emerges as more than a simple antagonist — he is a tragic figure of dignity and injustice, one who remains admired by fans for his composure, courtesy, and the sympathetic motivations underlying his actions.
Biography[]
Background[]
Maestro was sent to the In-Between World by accident instead of being sent to the Human World and was lost. Eventually, Maestro discovered the kingdom and all the mamodo sent to the In-Between World and became their king.
Part I[]
Ever since Maestro bared a hatred against the Mamodo World and all the 99 other mamodo fighting for kingship and vowed revenge. This almost came to be when Maestro summoned Brago, Sherry, Kiyo, Zatch, and Ponygon to the In-Between World to use their power to open the gate to the Mamodo World. Ponygon was not of any use in the In-Between World because Sunbeam was not there, Ponygon did not have his book, and he cannot pronounce his spells because the only thing he can say is "Meru Meru Me!" Maestro first summoned Brago to the castle and informed him that in the In-Between World he didn't need Sherry to fight and deceived him into believing that burning Zatch's book would open the door to the Human World. After Zatch and Brago's strongest spells collide, the mamodo world door opens and Maestro attacks both mamodo. The fight is one sided with Maestro dominating until Sherry comes at full strength and Brago and Zatch combine their stongest spells to win and burn Maestro's book. Upon going back to the very world he vowed to destroy, Maestro says he's grown to respect his opponents and fades away.
