Laila and Albert

Laila (レイラ Reira) and her partner Albert (アルベール), are an Ancient Mamodo team as well as supporting characters that appear in the Ancient Mamodo Arc. Laila uses moon magic.

Appearance[]

Laila is a mamodo with dark purple hair and large violet eyes, accented by a pair of yellow horns that extend prominently from her head. Her outfit consists of a dark purple dress, sometimes depicted as navy blue in some media, with a crescent moon emblem at the center of the chest. Laila uses this emblem as the focal point to draw forth her moon wand, the weapon she wields to cast her spells. Around her neck, she wears a yellow necklace. Her footwear includes pink socks paired with purple shoes.

Albert (pronounced "AL-BAIR") has golden-blond hair and light blue eyes, a combination that gives him a striking, refined look. His usual outfit consists of a light blue jacket layered over a white shirt, paired with jeans and brown shoes, presenting a simple but stylish appearance. His height has not been officially confirmed, but based on his depiction on the cover of chapter 162 of the original manga, he appears to be a little taller than Megumi (167 cm) and about the same height as Kiyomaro (172 cm), putting him comfortably over 170 cm.

Personality[]

Laila’s most defining traits are her femininity, aloofness, and ambivalence. She often carries herself with a ladylike poise, preferring to be soft-spoken, subtle, and somewhat submissive in her mannerisms. Despite her quiet and reserved exterior, Laila possesses remarkable courage and a strong sense of justice. When others are in danger, she does not hesitate to take initiative, even at the risk of her own safety. Her aloof demeanor, often expressed through a placid or uninterested expression, conceals her softhearted nature; under enough emotional pressure, her calm façade easily breaks.

Although she is introverted, Laila does not struggle to connect with others. Having been trapped in stone for a millennium, she is particularly sensitive to loneliness and will quietly seek affection when she feels secure. This is most evident in her affectionate bond with her partner, Albert. She also behaves with a precocious intelligence and maturity that contrast her youthful appearance. In combat, Laila balances instinct with strategy, observing carefully and analyzing her opponents rather than rushing in recklessly. Laila’s seriousness, however, is tempered by her childlike qualities. She enjoys playing with toys, can be silly, and has occasional air-headed moments, such as her forgetfulness during the ruins’ traps. In the battle against Demolt, she was humorously the last to realize that the roof above them had long since been destroyed. She also has a mischievous, playful side, teasing those around her—whether taunting Demolt’s pride as a warrior, laughing at Kiyo and Zatch for cowering at Demolt’s roar, or tricking the group with a false letter in the New Year’s special.

In the broader context of the story, Laila stands out as one of the kindest and most sincere Mamodo of the Ancient 1000 Years, a polar opposite to Zofis’ cunning and cruelty. While most ancient Mamodo harbor bitterness or hatred after being sealed in stone, Laila never vents her frustrations in violence or cruelty. Even when she is unable to speak openly with Albert for fear of betrayal, she remains loyal to her convictions, ultimately choosing to aid Zatch and his friends without hesitation. Her politeness when first meeting them, her refusal to compromise her values, and her willingness to declare, “It’s us who are wrong,” demonstrate both her integrity and her inner strength. Overall, Laila embodies a rare mix of grace, bravery, and playfulness. Though reserved in demeanor, she is deeply empathetic, morally grounded, and mentally strong—qualities that make her one of the most admirable Mamodo in the series.

Albert’s personality is difficult to see for much of the Ancient Mamodo Arc because his mind is under Zofis’s control and he is not able to talk unless reading a spell. During this time, he acts against his will, leaving little indication of his true character. However, once he regains consciousness, his genuine personality becomes clear. Albert is shown to be a kind and good-hearted young man who values friendship and the strength of bonds. He is calm and thoughtful, preferring to act with quiet resolve rather than bravado. His protective nature is most evident in his partnership with Laila, where he consistently prioritizes her safety and well-being. He demonstrates empathy and gentleness, comforting Laila and reassuring her even in dangerous moments. Despite his calm demeanor, Albert has a firm sense of loyalty and responsibility, and once free from manipulation, he chooses to fight alongside Laila and the others without hesitation. Overall, Albert emerges as a character defined by sincerity and compassion. Though his time under Zofis clouds much of his portrayal, the moments where he acts freely highlight a reliable, empathetic, and quietly courageous young man whose strength lies as much in his heart as in his actions.

Biography[]

Background[]

Laila and Victoream fighting together during the previous battle

Laila and Victoream fighting together during the previous battle

Laila participated in the previous battle to decide the Mamodo King 1,000 years ago. During the battle, Laila fought alongside her previous partner in numerous conflicts during the Viking era, when she and Victoream temporarily allied. Both of their partners had been kidnapped by pirates — Victoream’s human companion and Laila’s partner’s family — prompting the two Mamodos to join forces to rescue them. Laila and Victoream battled the pirate leader, who also possessed a spellbook, and their mamodo, defeating them with ease. This marked the start of a strange camaraderie between the two where they seemingly continued to run into each other.[1] At some point during the previous battle, Laila and her partner ran into Goren of the Stone and Maurice and was turned into a stone tablet by his spell, Dioga Gorugojio.

After being trapped in a stone table for 1,000 years, Laila was returned to her body by Zofis when he used the Stone of Moonlight on her and the other ancient mamodo trapped in stone. Like most of the other ancient mamodo, Laila was partnered with Albert, a modern-day descendant of her previous partner who was brainwashed by Zofis. Laila and Albert appear after Zatch and friends defeat Victoream. Accompanied by Dalmos and Elizabeth, she assists them as best she can, knowing what Zofis was doing was wrong. After Dalmos was sent back to the Mamodo World (mostly due to the arrival of Kafk Sunbeam, resulting in Ponygon's power being unlocked), she helped the remaining protagonists out of the castle, and told them about the Stone of Moonlight.

Later, when Zatch, Kiyo, Sunbeam, and Ponygon enter the palace, Laila attacks them, having been put under spell by Zofis. She stands beneath the Stone of Moonlight, which shines down through a hole in the ceiling, and expresses that she, like Pamoon, will do anything to prevent being turned back to stone. Kiyo convinces her otherwise, and at first she feels like stone, but after a tear of Albert hits her, she awakens, and Albert is now not under Zofis’ command. She the. leads them upstairs and helps them destroy the Stone of Moonlight and (with the help of her newly awakened partner) defeat Demolt, the guardian of the Stone and the most powerful of all the Ancient Mamodo. After the Stone of Moonlight is destroyed, it was revealed how strong Laila and Albert are. In episode 78, Albert seems to know what's going on with Laila even though he has not completely awakened. His quote in school is "School is kinda of boring anyway" which hints that he is quite intelligent, but doesn't really like school. When freed by Penny, he seems to remember what happened before that, making it seem the book had to be burned after the Stone of Moonlight was destroyed in order to remember. She and Albert help to defeat Zofis as well. After the battle with Zofis, Laila asks Zatch to burn her book. Before she disappears, she kisses Albert on the cheek for being a good partner.

Clear Note Arc[]

Laila is seen when Zatch remembers those who are important to him and all the friends he is fighting the battle for. She later helps Zatch against his battle with Clear Note, using her ultimate spell "Miberna Shin Migron" along with Pamoon’s "Farseeze Baron" to defend Zatch against Clear's infinite horn bullets. Near the ending of the manga, during Zatch's battle with Clear, Albert is seen looking at a crescent moon, possibly remembering Laila. This is further evidenced in the manga only spin off Zatch Cafe’ (Gash Café in Japan). In it Leila is dining with Victoream, reminiscing about how they fought together in the previous battle. While his face nor name is revealed, it can be said by his clothes that he was medieval French. Meaning Albert is as well.

She is last seen attending school being placed two grades above Zatch, socializing with Pokkeiro. She is then seen taking a group photo with all the other mamodo to send to their partners.
