| Overview |
Koral Q (コーラルQ, Kōraru Q, also "Coral Q" but translated as "Koral Q" in the English localization) and Grubb (グラブ, Gurabu) are a team encountered by Zatch and Kiyo. Koral Q has the rare ability to detect other Mamodo, and using this they have been spying on Zatch, his friends and the other Mamodo. His magic revolves around his transformations. Before meeting Zatch and Kiyo, Grubb was the way Kiyo was before meeting Zatch: High IQ, friendless, and no interest in making friends with anyone.
Appearance[]
Part I[]
Koral Q is a small robot-like mamodo with a square, metallic body. His face is flat with large round eyes, a circular red nose, and a straight mouth line. He has a large “Q” on his chest, standing out against his body. Antenna-like rods stick out from his head with yellow tips, and his arms and legs are thin, ending in gloves and boots. Despite his toy-like size and design, his mechanical body is capable of various transformations in battle that alter his appearance and abilities.
Grubb, his bookkeeper, is a young man with curly orange hair and glasses. He wears a white lab coat over a striped shirt, teal pants, and brown shoes, giving him the appearance of a researcher or scientist.
Part II[]
Koral Q retains his robot-like design but with a sleeker, more polished look compared to his first series appearance. His body is still box-shaped with a large red “Q” prominently displayed on his chest. His arms and legs appear slightly sturdier, with rounded joints and metallic plating accented by yellow rings. His antennae now feature bold yellow loops at the ends, making them stand out more. His face remains expressive with large circular eyes, a small red nose, and a wide, mechanical grin, emphasizing his toy-like yet mechanical nature. His lower body is fitted with treads.
Personality[]
Koral Q places complete faith in logic, strategy, and preparation. He possesses the ability to sense the presence of other mamodo anywhere in the world, a power that he and Grubb use to study and analyze opponents before ever encountering them. Confident in this advantage, Koral Q boasts that he has already researched and accounted for every spell his enemies might use, often taunting them with knowledge of their techniques and weaknesses. This arrogance makes him dismissive and condescending, and he shows little concern for the struggles of others, even refusing to intervene when aware of Zofis’s schemes. Despite his mechanical appearance, Koral Q still experiences pain and fear, and when Kiyo exposes that Zakeruga can hurt him even in transformed states, he grows visibly shaken. His pride drives him to rely on Grubb’s data and his transformations to maintain control of a battle, but his defeat at the hands of Zatch and Kiyo forces him to confront the truth: data alone cannot surpass the strength found in trust, courage, and bonds with others. In his final moments, Koral Q sheds his arrogance and admits his shortcomings, encouraging Grubb to open his heart and make friends.
Grubb begins as a cold, dismissive young man who believes social connections are unnecessary. He avoids interacting with others, viewing most people as inferior to him, and places his confidence entirely in his intellect and analytical ability. This arrogance makes him an ideal partner for Koral Q’s data-driven strategies, as he sees battles not as emotional struggles but as problems to be solved with logic and calculation. Despite his detached personality, Grubb is highly dedicated to supporting Koral Q, constantly updating his data in real time and adapting his partner’s forms to counter any threat. After Koral Q’s defeat, however, Grubb is forced to reflect on his isolation. Moved by his partner’s final words, he slowly begins to change, showing a warmer, more approachable side. By the end of his arc, Grubb has learned the value of friendship and teamwork, proving that Koral Q’s influence stayed with him even after his disappearance.
Biography[]
Background[]
Grubb was a young college student who lived with the belief that he had no reason to associate with others. Even when invited to join in something as simple as a basketball game, he ignored those around him, preferring to keep himself isolated and focused on his own pursuits. One day, he informed his professor that he would be taking time away from school to travel to Japan, determined to search for answers to a question that had weighed heavily on his mind. Alongside him was his mamodo partner, Koral Q, a mechanical-looking demon whose body could transform into a wide range of battle forms. With Grubb’s handheld computer constantly updating Koral Q’s abilities through collected battle data, the pair devised a plan to defeat Zatch and Kiyo, believing that by analyzing and countering their every spell, victory was inevitable.
Part I[]
Faudo Arc[]
While Kiyo began researching a mysterious structure tied to the Demon World, Grubb and Koral Q started quietly observing him, setting up an elaborate trap to draw him and Zatch into battle. Using a mechanical flying yellowtail as bait, they lured Zatch to a bridge under construction, ultimately cornering him and Kiyo on an unfinished freeway where they destroyed the escape route. Introducing themselves with confidence, Koral Q wasted no time transforming into his battle form, showcasing both the speed of his changes and his detailed knowledge of Zatch’s spell list. Though Koral Q initially bragged that Zakeruga would not harm him, Kiyo quickly exposed the bluff by striking him repeatedly, proving that even in battle form he still felt pain. For a moment, Koral Q considered surrender, but Grubb reminded him that his true defensive forms had not yet been used, reigniting their confidence.
What followed was a fierce and strategic battle. Grubb cast Ra Robogaruga to give Koral Q a reflective body, allowing him to turn Zakeruga back against his opponents. They then used Bīzamu Roboruga, splitting the attack to destroy Rashirudo and strike directly at Zatch, though Zatch shielded Kiyo with his own body. Recognizing their opponents’ unexpected resilience, Grubb began updating Koral Q’s data mid-fight, enhancing his strength by 30%. Each time Zatch and Kiyo countered with creativity, Grubb would deploy another transformation: Muromu Roboruku to turn Koral Q’s body to rubber, nullifying Jikerudo; Digou Roboruku to surpass Zatch’s Rauzaruku-enhanced speed and strength. For every answer Zatch and Kiyo found, Grubb calculated a new adjustment, making the pair a relentless tactical challenge.
Eventually, the battle reached its peak when Grubb cast Koral Q’s most powerful transformation, Ganjirudo Roboron. In this ultimate form, Koral Q wielded a vast array of electrified shields, claiming that not even Bao Zakeruga could pierce through them. Yet, Kiyo noticed something crucial: by chaining Zaguruzem across the shields, they could create a chain detonation effect to empower Bao Zakeruga far beyond its normal limits. With precise timing, Zatch and Kiyo executed their plan, unleashing a Bao Zakeruga that grew in size and strength with every chained link of electricity. The final strike shattered Koral Q’s defenses and brought him down.
As he lay defeated and fading away, Koral Q reflected on what separated him from his opponents. He admitted that despite all his calculations and transformations, what truly gave Zatch and Kiyo their edge was the trust they shared as partners, and the support of the friends who stood by them. He warned them that greater threats still lay ahead, referencing a strange presence detected by his radar — something that felt like a demon, but not entirely. Before vanishing, Koral Q turned to Grubb, urging him to seek out friendship instead of isolation, just as Kiyo had. Grubb, shaken, stayed by his partner’s side until the very end, answering “yes” when Koral Q asked if he was glad he had come to Japan. Koral Q disappeared along with his book, leaving Grubb behind.
Grubb eventually returned to his hometown, where the lessons of his partner began to take root. No longer as cold and dismissive as before, he started associating with peers he once ignored, even helping a basketball team develop a strategy that led to their victory. Watching them celebrate, Grubb smiled as others remarked on how much he had changed. In that moment, he quietly thought of Koral Q and thanked him, knowing that his partner’s final words had guided him toward a better life.
Clear Note Arc[]
Koral Q is one of the mamodo seen when Zatch gains the Golden Spellbook. Back in the Mamodo world, Koral Q appears transformed into a truck, moving rocks with Demolt. Grubb is one of the book keepers we see get a letter from their mamodo, as he reads his note we see him building a model plane.
Part II[]
Koral Q's revival is orchestrated by Dr. Riddles, who instructs Vino to get Grubb. Grubb is reintroduced as a grown young man, whom Kiyo does not recognize at first. After reviving Koral Q by pouring his spells into the spellbook, he is able to read three spells from Koral Q’s book: Roboroku, Roboruga, and Bīzamu Roboruga. Koral Q himself reveals a new upgraded form of Roboruku, transformed into a large mechanical warrior equipped with wings, making him more mobile and versatile in combat. At first, he downplays his willingness to help, telling Zatch and Kiyo that their struggles are not his concern. However, Kiyo acknowledges his upgrades, especially the wings, and praises his growth.
This recognition sways Koral Q, who warms up to fighting alongside them, showing that encouragement and respect still motivate him deeply. The pair immediately prove their worth in the battle against Bleu, Bobby, Hem, and the Rolling Witch. Koral Q demonstrates his new power by countering Bleu’s Butterfly Needle with Roboruga, and with Kiyo’s perfect timing, the spell manages to overpower her attack. Working closely with Zatch and Kiyo, they launch Bīzamu Roboruga, with Zatch and Kiyo clinging to his wings, striking Hem and testing even the might of Beliel’s enforcer.
