Overview

Konjiki no Gash Bell!! Golden Memories (金色のガッシュベル!! Golden Memories) is a role-playing web browser game released by BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc. in Japan on March 27, 2019. The game was free-to-play on Enza Fun's website, but was primarily developed to be played on mobile devices.

The server was shut down on March 31, 2020, just a year and four days after its initial release. Despite its short run, Golden Memories earned praise from fans for its faithful nostalgia and strategic card system.

Gameplay & Mechanics[]

Golden Memories combines turn-based RPG combat with a deck-building card battle system, echoing the series’ spellbook theme. Players construct a deck (a “spellbook”) of cards called “Memories,” which are collectible cards each depicting a famous scene or spell. During battles, the player’s chosen mamodo team faces an opponent team in a 1-on-1 duel, and victory is achieved by reducing the opponent’s life points to zero. Combat is turn-based: each turn, the game presents a set of cards from the player’s deck (e.g. three pairs of Memory cards), and the player selects a pair to play.

Each Memory card has an associated power value (and sometimes a special effect), and when a pair is played their values combine as damage to the enemy. The strategic twist is in pairing cards whose effects or values complement each other, much like using the right spell at the right time. This system is simple to learn yet offers surprising depth – fans noted that building an optimal spellbook and timing card plays could be challenging and rewarding.

Notably, many low-level spells in the game are generic and can be used by any character, a departure from the manga where each mamodo has unique spells. This allowed for more flexible deck strategies, though each Mamodo team also has signature high-level spell cards that reflect their unique powers. The visuals of combat show the two partner characters on screen performing attacks with elemental effects and voice-acted spell calls – the game even recorded new voice lines for spells and attacks (including some characters who never had lines in the original anime) to enhance the experience.

Playable Teams[]

No completely new characters were introduced in Golden Memories – the cast is composed entirely of returning characters from the original Konjiki no Gash Bell!! series, from the main heroes to supporting allies and villains. At launch the game featured 10 playable Mamodo–human teams, all drawn from the manga/anime, each with newly recorded voice lines by the original voice actors for authenticity. Additional characters from the series were added as playable in post-launch updates, and many others appear within story cutscenes or as collectible “memory” cards.

Reception & Legacy[]

Upon release, Konjiki no Gash Bell!! Golden Memories was met with enthusiasm from the Zatch Bell! fan community, though it flew under the radar of mainstream gaming critics (likely due to its Japan-only, browser-based nature). Fans praised the game’s faithfulness and nostalgia: the ability to see beloved characters animated with new voice lines and to personally reenact battles was a dream come true for long-time followers. Longtime fans also appreciated the attention to detail – from the 150+ memory illustrations of classic scenes to the inclusion of even minor characters. Many expressed disappointment when the game’s service ended so soon. Golden Memories was considered short-lived but well-loved.

Because the game did not receive an official English release, Western Zatch Bell! fans followed it through community translations and videos. A YouTuber named “XZatchBellGamerX” documented much of the game in English, uploading playthrough videos of story battles and menus. These videos served as an archive of the game’s content after shutdown. Moreover, fan developers stepped in to preserve Golden Memories: in 2021, a fan recreated the entire card game within Tabletop Simulator (a PC sandbox for board games), including all cards, decks, and even added English translations. his unofficial revival means that, although the official servers are gone, enthusiasts can still experience Golden Memories’ gameplay today in some form. The fan-made project made every card available (removing gacha grind) and faithfully retained the mechanics.

Critically, since Golden Memories was a modest browser game, it did not garner reviews from major gaming outlets. However, it was featured in news on sites like 4Gamer and Anime News Network when announced and when terminated, mainly as industry updates. The concept of adapting a completed manga into a card RPG was appreciated as part of a trend of nostalgic IP revivals. Some commentators hoped that the game’s release signaled a broader Zatch Bell! comeback. (Indeed, shortly after, Makoto Raiku did begin a sequel manga “Zatch Bell 2” in 2022, indicating renewed interest in the franchise – though that was independent of the game.) In comparison to the later 2024 mobile game Zatch Bell!! Friends of Eternal Bonds (a smartphone RPG), Golden Memories is remembered more fondly; fans on forums observed that Raiku himself promoted Golden Memories more, suggesting he regarded it as a respectful addition to his series. While Friends of Eternal Bonds introduced completely new characters and diverging story events, Golden Memories stayed canonical, which likely pleased purist fans.

Trivia[]

  • Although the game launched in 2019, it was one of the first official Zatch Bell projects in over a decade, predating the sequel manga Zatch Bell!! 2 (2022).
  • The game featured newly recorded voice lines by the original Japanese anime cast, including spell chants and battle dialogue that did not previously exist in animated form.
  • The Kolulu storyline is expanded into multiple battles in the game, whereas it is resolved in a single confrontation in the manga and anime.
  • The game ran for only one year (March 2019 – March 2020), a relatively short lifespan even by gacha and browser-game standards.
  • No official offline mode or archive was released after shutdown, making fan preservation projects (such as recreations in Tabletop Simulator) the only way to experience the game today.
  • The game’s shutdown occurred before the Faudo arc roster was fully expanded, suggesting additional characters and story chapters were planned but never implemented.
