Synopsis[]
Kanchomé uses "Poruku" to hide the team. They plan to recruit Penny to their side by getting Zatch to make up with her. It works until Penny asks Zatch about marriage, and he declines the proposal. Laila reveals that if she steps out of the moonlight, she will turn back to stone. Kiyo tells her that Zofis cannot turn anyone into stone, proven when Zofis had burned Pamoon's book instead of turning him to stone. Kiyo realizes that Zofis was implanting illusions of petrification for the thousand-year Mamodos and informs Laila. He tells her the moonstone is also a tool used by Zofis to psychologically control the Mamodos and is used with Zofis' mind-control ability. Laila attempts to leave the moonlight, but she finds her hand turning to stone. She admits she knows it's an illusion and leaves the moonlight. Laila's mind believes she has become petrified and her body becomes petrified. Her mind-controlled partner, Albert sheds a tear, freeing Laila from Zofis' illusion.
Full Summary[]
Laila listens to Kiyo's explanation
Just as Kiyo’s group was about to reach the center of the room where moonlight was shining down, they were suddenly attacked by Laila, whom they had thought was still their ally. After recovering, Kiyo tried to ask Laila why she attacked them and explained that they were trying to reach the moon stone in order to destroy it. After hearing this, Laila attacked again with another spell. Soon after, Patty and Byonko joined in to attack them. To buy time to recover and think about the situation, Kanchome used a spell to transform himself into a pillar to hide everyone temporarily. While they remained hidden, Kiyo told the group that he still wanted to try talking with Laila and find out why she had suddenly chosen to fight for Zofis.
Kiyo encourages Zatch to befriend Penny
While others in the group shared the same desire, Dr. Riddles pointed out that Patty and Byonko might interfere with the plan. Kiyo then realized that in order to stop them from attacking, it was up to Zatch to try befriending Patty since she still had feelings for him and might side with them if things worked out. Zatch was hesitant, still afraid of her aggressive side, but reluctantly went along as long as they were only friends. After Kanchome’s spell was cancelled, Kiyo called out to Patty to tell her that Zatch had decided he wanted to be her friend. Patty was overjoyed to hear this but misinterpreted it as Zatch wanting to marry her. Zatch became even more nervous and tried to reject the idea politely. Their attempt at befriending Patty ultimately failed when Patty grew enraged at Zatch for not returning her feelings. Although she was angry, Laila told Patty and Byonko to let her handle the situation.
Laila after being released from stone
Kiyo once again tried talking to Laila, but after hearing again about their plan to destroy the moon stone, she interpreted it as them trying to turn her to stone. She attacked the group with another spell, but Ponygon in his battle form managed to stop it. Laila admitted that while what she and the other ancient demons were doing was wrong, she refused to be turned to stone again after having suffered that fate for a thousand years. Hearing this, Kiyo remembered what Pamoon had told him about Zofis once partially turning a demon to stone for betraying him, and realized fear was how Zofis controlled the ancient demons. Kiyo told Laila that there was no way for her to be turned to stone again, since Zofis had never truly recreated that spell. He explained that one of Zofis’ abilities was to control the hearts and minds of others, and that what she saw was an illusion. He added that Zofis’ control also extended to the bookkeepers and that the moon stone’s true purpose was to heighten his manipulation and control multiple hearts at once.
Laila reacts to being turned to stone by Zofis
As Laila thought about this, a flashback revealed Zofis confronting her after she helped Kiyo’s group escape the ruins. He told her of their plan to destroy the moon stone and demonstrated what would happen if they did by making her believe her body was turning to stone. Zofis warned her that if she did not want to suffer that fate again, she must not leave the moonlit area. Returning to the present, Laila thought about Kiyo’s words and even stretched her hand outside of the moonlight. From her perspective she saw her hand turning to stone, but the others only saw her shaking in fear. Terrified, she pleaded with them to let her defeat them and prepared a powerful attack.
Kiyo stands in front of Laila
Just before she could attack, Kiyo handed Dr. Riddles his spellbook and ran toward Laila. Standing in front of her with open arms, he told her that they wanted to help and continued reasoning with her. Laila let go of her wand and asked Kiyo what she should do, realizing that while what she saw was an illusion, the fear and anxiety she felt nearly paralyzed her. At that moment, Patty tried to intervene by ordering Laila to attack. Before she could do more, Zatch stepped forward and confronted Patty about her cruelty. Realizing how much pain Laila was experiencing, Patty quietly backed down.
Albert holds Laila and cries for her
After some time, Laila decided for herself to step outside of the moonlight. Kiyo tried to warn her what might happen, but she told him she had made up her mind, believing she couldn’t move forward otherwise. She thanked Kiyo for his help and leapt outside of the moonlight. Her mind perceived her body turning to stone. Despite knowing it was an illusion, her body became paralyzed and her vision darkened. Suddenly, she felt someone holding her hand and crying for her. The warmth restored her consciousness, and she saw that her bookkeeper Albert was the one holding her. Seeing him cry for her, she realized that Albert had always been listening to her. Having overcome Zofis’ illusions, she promised Albert that she would save him from Zofis’ control as well. The episode ended with Laila rallying the group to prepare for battle against the fearsome demon protecting the moon stone.

- Details such as blood from injuries are cleaned up from characters in the VIZ localization but other things such as scratches and clothing tears are usually left alone. All bleeding seen on Kiyo would be cleaned up in the VIZ localization
- Scenes that showed Penny’s underwear were edited to have a crudely drawn pair of shorts on her.
