Synopsis[]

After reading a comic about a child searching for their mother, Zatch begins reflecting on his own forgotten mother and observes Hana’s care around the house, which makes him wonder if she could be like a mother to him. When Kiyo suggests this directly, Zatch becomes upset, insisting Hana isn’t his real mother and running away in tears. Hana chases after him, and when she finally catches up, Zatch admits he often thought of her as a mother but feared doing so would erase the feelings he has for his true one. Hana reassures him that it’s okay to have two mothers and embraces him, giving Zatch the warmth he had been searching for. The next day, Hana once again prepares him lunch and sees him off with love, solidifying their bond.

Full Summary[]

Just before Zatch leaves home for the afternoon, Hana hands him a lunch she prepared for him and wishes him to have a good day. Zatch spends the majority of his afternoon exploring town and engaging in other activities before he stops to have his lunch on a grassy hill overlooking the city. After he eats, he notices a stray comic book not too far away from him and he goes to inspect it. The comic book itself is then revealed to be about a young fruit character who goes on a journey to reunite with their mother. Zatch becomes engrossed in its story and after finishing it, he begins to wonder about his own mother. Despite having lost his memories of the Demon World, Zatch faintly remembers a warm and comforting feeling of being embraced and he is convinced that this feeling has some connection to his mother. Curious in figuring out the kind of person his mother is, Zatch decides that he will observe mothers in town to see if he will see something that will help him remember his own mother.

Zatch makes little progress in studying others in town until he remembers Hana and decides he will watch what she does instead. At home, Zatch watches in amazement as Hana does the household chores with great efficiency. Zatch would then go on to share his observations with Kiyo as he returns home from school. In his room, Kiyo listens to Zatch talk about the work Hana does around the house then asks him what’s been on his mind. Zatch then tells Kiyo that he had been wondering about the kind of person his own mother is and thought about Hana at the same time. Kiyo then explains to Zatch that it seemed he was experiencing homesickness as he was expressing some desire to be able to return home to meet his mother. Zatch responds saying that this is only partially true as he wants to remember details about his mother but isn’t eager to go home yet. Kiyo tries to sympathize for Zatch’s situation by suggesting to him that he can consider Hana as his mother while he’s here but this causes Zatch to suddenly become bothered by Kiyo’s words. Just outside of Kiyo’s bedroom door, Hana overhears Zatch, now upset, remind Kiyo that Hana isn’t his real mother and how horrible he feels Kiyo’s sentiment was to him. Zatch then storms out of the room in tears and runs away from home. Deeply concerned for Zatch, Hana tells Kiyo that he needs to go find Zatch and he leaves the house in search of him.

Kiyo frantically searches around town for Zatch even as the sun starts to set but is unable to find him. While looking for him, he runs into Tia who tells him that she and Megumi had just returned from a photoshoot in Tahiti and brought a gift for him. While with Tia, Kiyo explains to her about the situation with Zatch. Tia tells Kiyo that she understands how Zatch is feeling but adds that his situation must be worse as he has no memories of the Demon World. Meanwhile, Zatch hides himself away at the park inside of his cardboard box hideout still thinking about his mother. As Zatch comes out of his hideout, Hana approaches him and holds out his Vulcan 300 to him. Upon seeing Hana, Zatch runs away again, still unable to face her just yet. This time however, Hana chases after him herself and Zatch tries desperately to run away from her.

Hana sprints after Zatch for some time before attempting to lunge forward to grab him, but just barely misses, causing her to fall onto the ground. Worried for her, Zatch stops to see if she’s alright. Finally speaking with her, Zatch apologizes to her for having said that she wasn’t his mother and that he loves her for always caring for him the way she does. Zatch goes on to also admit to her that he had even thought of her as a mother many times but is scared of these thoughts as he fears he may lose the feelings in his heart for his real mother. After listening to him, Hana hugs Zatch, reassuring him that it’s okay and that there’s nothing wrong with having two mothers. She then tells Zatch that she even considers him as one of her own children. Hana’s comforting embrace causes Zatch to recall the same feeling that he had been thinking of that whole day and this moment with Hana was exactly what he had been searching for the whole time. Zatch and Hana both start to cry as they stay there together holding each other tightly. The very next day, Zatch is about to leave the house but is stopped by Hana, who gives him a lunch that she prepared for him as usual. With this in hand, Hana wishes him off and Zatch heads off to start his day.
