Grisor (グリサ Gurisa) and Dr. Hakase (ハカセ Hakase) are a human-mamodo team who fought against Zatch, Kiyo, Shion, and Nya in the filler Magic Mirror arc of the anime. While they utilize Fire Magic and Magma Magic, he can transform from the power of the Magic Mirror and his spells are a hundred times stronger through the Magic Mirror.

Appearance[]

Grisor is a small, imp-like mamodo with a wrinkled face, pointed ears, and three eyes, one of which is set into his hat as an ornament. He typically wears a purple tunic and a matching hat. After harnessing the power of the Mamodo Mirror, he transforms into a large, purple, ogre-like demon (oni), with his spells amplified to monstrous levels.

Dr. Hakase, his bookkeeper, is depicted as a slender, elderly man with a frail yet calculating presence. He wears a long white lab coat that emphasizes his role as a scientist. His body bears numerous metal implants, suggesting past injuries, possibly from Mamodo-related battles or experiments. These include iron plates fixed above his temples, a large implant embedded in his right cheek, and a fully mechanical left arm outfitted with a small monitor. The mechanical arm not only marks him visually but also reinforces his characterization as a disgraced scientist who has merged his intellect with machinery. Combined with his sharp features and cold demeanor, Hakase’s appearance reflects both his brilliance and the price of his ambition.

Personality[]

Grisor is arrogant, mean-spirited, and highly deceitful, displaying a natural talent for trickery and manipulation. He feigns friendship when it serves his purposes, as seen in how he deceived Shion Hibiki and Nya, taking advantage of their emotions to further his pursuit of the Mamodo Mirror. He lies without hesitation, showing no guilt in trampling on the feelings of others if it brings him closer to his goals. In this way, Grisor’s cruelty and manipulation echo the methods of Zofis, making it clear why Zatch and Kiyo’s anger toward him burned so strongly. His ability to exploit the “hearts” of others firmly establishes him as a villain within the anime-original storyline.

However, Grisor is also portrayed with a comical side. In flashback scenes, when Fusashi’s invention boosts the strength of his spells, he bursts out with an innocent “Yay!” in childlike excitement. Likewise, when Kiyo questions his intentions, he nervously blurts a panicked “Giku!”—a reaction more fitting of a bumbling trickster than a true mastermind. These lighter moments distinguish him from major antagonists such as Zofis and Riou, framing Grisor as both dangerous and ridiculous: a schemer whose cruelty is undercut by his comical incompetence.

Dr. Hakase mirrors Grisor’s ruthless ambition, driven by a desire for revenge against the scientific community that cast him out. Cold, calculating, and vindictive, he leans on his inventions and intellect to amplify Grisor’s power, taking pride in his ability to outwit others through machinery and strategy. He carries the presence of a disgraced intellectual—once respected for his brilliance, now consumed by bitterness and obsession. Although the story never explains why he was expelled from the academic society, his cruelty and lack of humanity suggest that his downfall may not have been due to his research alone, but also his character. It remains possible that Hakase was once a well-intentioned scientist, but his thirst for vengeance ultimately twisted his mind, transforming him into a villain who sacrificed morality for the sake of revenge.

Together, Hakase and Grisor form a partnership built on lies, ambition, and mutual opportunism. While Grisor exploits the emotions of others through deception, Hakase bolsters those schemes with his own cunning devices. His lack of remorse is most clearly shown in his treatment of Kotone; even as she crawled in grief during the final battle, Hakase mercilessly trampled her, demonstrating his complete disregard for compassion or innocence.

Biography[]

Background[]

Dr. Hakase is introduced as a renowned physicist within the world of the story. Kiyo Takamine recognizes his name, remarking, “I’ve read a few of his books,” and describing him as highly intelligent based on his writings. Several of Hakase’s own works are even kept in the apartment he shares with Grisor, including a volume titled Mysterious Physics, though its contents are never revealed. Despite his reputation, Hakase was eventually expelled from the academic community under unknown circumstances. The story never explains the reason for his dismissal or the precise nature of his research, leaving his fall from grace shrouded in mystery. On the night after his expulsion, Hakase was approached at a garbage dump by Grisor, who offered him the chance for revenge against the scientific society. Accepting the role of Grisor’s bookkeeper, Hakase became his partner in the search for the Magic Mirror.

Hakase supports Grisor’s schemes through his scientific inventions and cunning tactics. While none of his devices are particularly inhumane or dangerous, they showcase his technical skill and resourcefulness. Among his creations were surveillance cameras to track opponents, elaborate traps to hinder intruders, and even fake ruins designed to deceive Zatch and his allies. Unlike most bookkeepers, Hakase’s ambitions were tied less to the Mamodo Battle itself and more to his own resentment of the scientific community that rejected him. By aligning with Grisor, he found both companionship and a means of striking back at the world that had cast him aside. Believing that reassembling the Magic Mirror would grant Grisor power without the risk of losing his book, the two became central figures in the conflict. Their actions drew in Zatch, Kiyo, and their allies, setting off the chain of events that defined the Magic Mirror Arc storyline.

Part I[]

After descending to the human world, Grisor searched tirelessly for the fragments of the Mamodo Mirror. Upon finding one lodged in a crater, he began his schemes in earnest, deceiving Shion and Nya by preying on Shion’s fear of losing her partner. He promised that the mirror would allow them to escape the Mamodo Battle, but secretly planned to use it for his own gain. Around the same time, he also hired Cut n’ Paste to help locate its pieces. When Zatch accidentally acquired a mirror fragment, Grisor observed the situation from a distance, only revealing himself once Kotono had retrieved it.

He later hosted Zatch and his companions at his apartment under the pretense of cooperation, attempting to trick Kiyo into handing over their fragments. Still suspicious of his motives, Kiyo demanded to accompany Grisor to the ruins, where the mirror could be restored. Inside the ruins, Grisor staged a false ritual, forcing the group into humiliating antics while secretly embedding the fragments into the walls. Using the confusion to his advantage, he reclaimed the mirror and fled, escaping with the aid of his human partner, Dr. Hakase, whose devices provided cover. With the mirror restored, Grisor activated the spell Riapuru, transforming into a gigantic ogre-like demon whose flames were magnified a hundredfold by the mirror’s power.

His enhanced strength and firepower allowed him to overwhelm Nya, ultimately burning her book despite Kotono’s desperate attempts to shield her partner. He mocked her grief, sneering at her tears and dismissing her pain as weakness. Empowered by rage, Zatch and Kiyo challenged Grisor. Though his magma-based techniques nearly crushed them, Kotono’s intervention caused the mirror to crack, weakening his enhanced form. In the climactic clash, Zatch’s Baou Zakeruga overpowered Grisor’s fiery assault, shattering the mirror completely. The mirror’s destruction stripped Grisor of his amplified strength, returning him to his smaller form. His book ignited, and with a comical cry of defeat, he was banished back to the Mamodo World, ending both his schemes and Hakase’s ambitions.

Trivia[]

  • In the original Japanese series, Dr. Hakase's name was Ichirou Hakase, which means Dr. Ichirou in Japanese (Hakase meaning "Doctor"). Due to an error in translation, his name was translated as Dr. Hakase, basically, Dr. Doctor.
  • Grisor is an anime-specific character, meaning he doesn't appear in the manga and is therefore not canon.
