Gofure (ゴフレ, Gofure) and Renji (連次, Renji) are an early team encountered by Zatch and Kiyo. Gofure's spells are have the Earth attribute.

Appearance[]

Gofure is a small, dog-like mamodo with a simple yet highly distinctive design. His body is compact and quadrupedal, setting him apart from the more humanoid mamodo seen throughout the series. He is primarily white in coloration, accented by dark markings across his ears, back, and tail. His rounded snout and small, black eyes give him an unassuming and almost ordinary canine appearance. When the Doruku spell is activated, his appearance changes dramatically: his body morphs into a rhinoceros-like form, with large rocks embedded across his frame.

Renji, Gofure’s human partner, is a tall and muscular man with short blond hair and a sharp, stern expression. He wears a dark navy cloak adorned with the pair’s red-and-yellow emblem on the chest, draped over an orange shirt, light khaki pants, and red-and-white sneakers.

Personality[]

Gofure’s human-equivalent age is around seven years old, so it is believed that he should be capable of speaking. However, he only has a few spoken lines in the main story (though he does speak briefly in the Gash Café extra chapter included in the Complete Edition). In the story, he carries out a plan to approach Zatch by exploiting his loneliness, suggesting that—despite his adorable appearance—he may actually be surprisingly cunning.

Renji enjoys the entertainment of the Mamodo Battle and believes that Gofure is strong enough to defeat all 99 mamodo. Because Renji appears so infrequently, much about his personality remains unclear. However, during his confrontation with Zatch, Renji tells Gofure, “The battle you invited me to sounded interesting, so I agreed,” and later says, “I’m finally fighting someone who seems worthy of a challenge, so I can wait until after that to steal the book.” These lines suggest that Renji is a belligerent, battle-driven character who values a worthwhile fight even more than achieving his objective.

Biography[]

Background[]

Part I[]

Renji lost Gofure on a rainy day, but finds him with Zatch going home to Kiyo's house, Gofure having befriended Zatch after an argument with Kiyo. However, his true power and form are revealed when his bookkeeper Renji appears at the Takamine residence and reads his spell, Doruk. Gofure grows and attacks Zatch, and they engage in battle with Kiyo and Zatch in an attempt to burn Zatch's book. The two of them attempt to fight back, but with bitter emotions still between them, Gofure and Renji easily dominate them. Just as they are about to finish them off, Brago and Sherry step in, defeating Gofure with a single Reis and leaving him in his puppy form, powerless on the floor. Brago orders a terrified Renji to leave the book and go, and he complies, with Brago burning his book off-screen. Their exact placement is unknown, but in the manga they were one of the first 24 mamodo to be eliminated.

During Zatch's battle with Clear Note, Gofure is seen supporting Zatch along with other Mamodo. He is also seen in a picture with all the Mamodo sent with Zatch's letter to Kiyo.

Part II[]

The General commanding Gofure and other mamodo

The General commanding Gofure and other mamodo

Gofure appears under the coercive authority of Beliel’s regime, identified during the events at Bamfro Castle as one of the so-called “traitor mamodos.” Dragged before a uniformed commander, he is forced to publicly state his name and responds by barking it out, a reaction that conveys defiance rather than submission. His refusal to appear broken is immediately met with violence, as he is struck down and verbally dismissed as worthless, reinforcing the commander’s effort to humiliate and dominate the assembled mamodos. Despite the degradation, Gofure is selected as part of the group labeled the “best of the worst,” a designation used to justify further exploitation rather than honor. He is fitted with a control wristband designed to enable forced activation of spell vials, a mechanism that functions as a leash binding him more tightly to Beliel’s will. Under this enforced control, Gofure is conscripted into a unit tasked with hunting and killing other mamodos who oppose Beliel, embodying the regime’s reliance on fear, coercion, and forced complicity.

Trivia[]

  • Gofure has the distinction of being the first non-humanoid Mamodo to make an appearance.
  • According to the official databook, Renji's nationality is Japanese.
  • Due to Gofure's friendliness to Zatch, the difference between his normal form and his transformed self, and his visible fear when Renji approaches, it is possible that he is a Mamodo like Kolulu, whose belligerent personality was given to him for the battle.
  • Gofure's starting location in the Human World was in Japan.
