Buzarai (ブザライ, Buzarai) and Kars (カーズ, Kāzu) are a mamodo team that appear during the Faudo Arc. Buzurai placed 27th in the battle.

Appearance[]

Buzarai has a commanding and regal presence reminiscent of a medieval warrior. His armor is a striking combination of red and silver, embellished with golden details. He has a flowing white cape with a high collar and helmet, adorned with a large crest and sharp designs. Buzarai also wears spiked gauntlets and fur-trimmed boots.

Kars exudes a sleek and modern aesthetic with her futuristic outfit. She wears a dark ensemble featuring a black and purple top with short sleeves, accented by a gray stripe across the chest. Her pants are a deep navy shade, highlighted by two bold yellow stripes wrapping around her thighs. Her short, platinum-blond hair is styled sharply. Black boots complete her look.

Personality[]

Buzarai is not a minor “mob” character eliminated in just a few panels, yet his exact personality remains difficult to define. During his extended battle against Zatch and Kanchomé, it was only Keith who spoke, while Buzarai remained completely silent aside from brief cries of pain when attacked. As of April 2024, no official material—including the Zatch Bell!! fanbooks, Raiku Makoto’s blog These Days, his Twitter, or the Gash Cafe extras—provides any further insight into Buzarai’s inner thoughts, leaving his character largely unexplored. What can be inferred from the story is that he displays remarkable coordination with Keith, with Kiyo himself remarking on their “incredibly good combination.” Buzarai never appears shaken or impulsive in combat, suggesting he is calm, collected, and intelligent despite his silence. Generally, he functions as the brawn to Keith’s brains, a silent, armor-like mamodo whose powers focus on the massive axe strapped to his back.

Since Kars only appears a few times, her exact personality is largely unknown. However, like Buzarai, she shows no fear when confronted with Kanchomé’s Dikaporuku, calmly countering it with an appropriate spell, suggesting she has a fair amount of combat experience and composure. In the anime, her background is expanded—she is portrayed as a Taekwondo practitioner, and in episode 129 she demonstrates this by striking Zatch with a powerful heel drop and palm strike that sends him flying. This martial arts characterization is unique to the anime and does not appear in the manga, where Kiyo and Zatch never directly confront her.

Biography[]

Background[]

Riou nominates Buzarai and Keith as “monsters accustomed to combat” to intercept Zatch’s group as they approach Faudo. He first appears alongside Keith when they attack Apollo’s plane, releasing Gazuron from the forest to damage the wings and break them apart. This forces Kiyo’s group to jump from the plane, where Buzarai and Keith immediately move to engage them. Unlike Riou’s other followers, Buzarai’s ambition is not to become king by wielding Faudo’s power, but to fight with the Faudo cult and claim Faudo itself as a trophy.

Part I[]

When the battle begins, Buzarai acts largely under Keith’s direction, displaying disciplined teamwork and a calm fighting style. He shields Keith with Go Gazushield, suppresses Zatch’s attacks with Urujim Gazun, and blocks Zakeruga multiple times with his defenses. Even with Keith’s constant insults and provocations, the two fight in perfect coordination, prompting Kiyomaro to remark that their teamwork is “incredibly good.” At this stage, Buzarai demonstrates the ability to nullify every spell Kanchomé has mastered on his first attempt, and he even pushes back Zatch without using his full strength, stating that he is not yet fighting at “80% of his power.”

Kanchomé initially retreats with Folgore to escape capture, but later returns to the battlefield to fight. When Folgore appears, they use Dima Buruku for the first time, creating clones that surround Keith and Buzarai and disrupt their strategy. Keith orders Buzarai to stop the clones, prompting him to cast Gigano Gazuron and Gou Gazuruku to target them, but the sheer number of illusions overwhelms his efforts. Despite this, he continues pressing forward and eventually prepares his ultimate technique.

In an effort to end the fight, Buzarai casts Dioga Gazuron, his most powerful spell. At the same time, Keith maneuvers behind Zatch’s group to prevent a Zagurzem chain reaction, but one of Kanchomé’s clones is hiding behind a rock and exposes his position. As a result, Keith is thrown directly into the line of fire. Dioga Gazuron collides with Kanchomé’s shield of clones, weakening its destructive force just enough for Zatch to counter. Empowered by a single Zagurzem, Zatch’s Baou Zakeruga shatters Dioga Gazuron and engulfs Buzarai. The combined backlash burns his spellbook, returning him and Kars to the Mamodo world.

Despite his defeat, Buzarai stands out as a composed, battle-hardened warrior whose combination with Keith made them one of Riou’s strongest pairs. He served as the brawn to Keith’s brains, demonstrating resilience, precision, and discipline even when overwhelmed. In the anime adaptation, Buzarai is further characterized as a Taekwondo practitioner. In episode 129, he strikes Zatch with a powerful heel drop and palm strike, sending him flying — though this scene is original to the anime and does not appear in the manga.

Clear Note Arc[]

In the final chapter’s group photo, Buzarai is shown standing near Gyaron.

Trivia[]

  • Buzarai is one of the few Mamodo who never speaks a line in the manga, making his personality unusually hard to define compared to other mamodo.
  • His regenerating chain-axe blade is never officially named, but the card game refers to it simply as a “blade.” This suggests it is an extension of his body, similar to Tsao-Lon’s and Laila’s weapons.
  • In the manga’s final group photo, Buzarai is drawn next to Gyaron, possibly as a visual nod to their shared “armored knight” motif.
